2018 - New Year, Similar Goals

Happy New Year! I hope you had a great Christmas and an enjoyable New Year. Usually, New Year doesn’t bother me, it’s just the day after the one before with a party sandwiched in-between after all. I enjoy the time with friends, but never give it much thought. However, this year, I’ve found the whole thing quite beneficial. I spent New Year’s Eve with my friends like any other year, but I’ve never thought about my plans for the upcoming year as much as I have this year.

Reflections on 2017

2017 was always going to be a big year, regardless. I was about to finish my final year at university which would inevitably bring with it; dissertations, graduation balls and ceremonies along with with a part time job and life in general. I knew I didn’t want to go down the grad job route and starting a business was the obvious choice. I remember when I decided to start 95 Social. I was walking to work and was on the corner of Hanover Street and Princes Street and that was that. I’ve no idea why it was this location in particular, I’d already had the ‘student delivered business service’ concept in mind for about two years but at that moment, social media caught my imagination.

Early days, starting a business was really fun. Expanding on the small business social media knowledge I already had from previous jobs and internships, deciding what 95 Social ‘looked like’ and finding my first clients gave me a great buzz. Of course, early business prospects came and went but I gradually found my feet in amongst final year exams and dissertation writing sessions in the library.

After graduating, I spent way more time on the business and learnt valuable lessons about the importance of creating value for your client. The final stretch of the year was frustrating. When you start a business you have all of these grand plans of how things will go. It might just be me, but I thought success would come really quick and when it doesn’t it tests how much you want to do this. It turns out, I really want to do this.

Looking Ahead

I worked a lot over the festive period. Most of this work was at my part time job. I do enjoy it, but when you have your own thing going on, you realise where your passions lie. The company I work for are very supportive but I want 95 Social to be my full time and that is my major focus for this part of the year.

In 2018, 95 Social needs to grow as a brand. Last year I discovered ‘what 95 Social was’ (a bit lame I know) but this year, I’m going to really solidify the brand. This will come down to consistent content, my own personal branding emphasising and spreading the brand’s message as well as quality story telling on all platforms. So expect more vlogs, written and audio blog posts, public speaking and networking as well as a new logo and website very soon.

Business development is one of my favourite things. I love meeting new people, exploring opportunities and finding new ways to do things. I always have and probably always will. My biggest resolution is to do even more of this. This is the bread and butter of any business. Finding clients and delivering a great service. Last year was a great learning curve, but this year is about executing on what I’ve learnt whilst learning even more. With more clients will come the opportunity to employ students who can bring a radically different perspective on social media and digital marketing to Scotland’s small businesses.

Let’s Get Going

This is my first dual audio and written blog post and I’m excited to see how it goes. This time next year, I hope I’ll be able to look back at where 95 Social is and be completely satisfied with a years worth of great progress. It’s going to take a lot of work but I love it and I’m excited to have already started.
